 | 28.99 | Grgich Hills 2006 Fume Blanc - Sauvignon Blanc White Wine White Wine by Grgich Hills from Napa Valley, California. The grapes were organically and biodynamically grown on Grgich Hills' cool American Canyon and Carneros vineyards, not far from the San Francisco Bay. In the glass, the wine offers a whiff of the tropics with kiwi, grapefruit, pineapple and a hint of minerality. On the tongue, this full-bodied wine has a crisp, refreshing texture and a long finish. This versatile, flavorful white wine is a great companion to a wide variety of food flavors and textures. In our recent tasting of older Sauvignon Blancs, no wine showed better with long-aging than the Grgich Hills 1983. These wines are always tight when young, and, at times, they make us wince at their bracing acidity. But, here is a wine that, while firm and only ready to drink for those who care for lean, brisk fruit as the first order of business, is so loaded with depth and promise that some of it should be put away for another day. This is a classic Napa Valley Cabernet which is wonderful young but has everything it needs to age beautifully. |
 | 89 | Barnett 2006 Cyrus Ryan Cabernet Sauvignon - Red Wine Red Wine by Barnett from Napa Valley, California. The wine exhibits a beautiful purple core and medium ruby rim with intense dark currant, black cherry and raspberry black olive on the nose. In addition, there is deep graphite minerality as well as cooking chocolate. Upon tasting the body is full and viscous, and the deep dark chocolate becomes really apparent. This is matched by blackberry and pencil lead. The chalky tannins are tighter than the 2005; the wine all around is firmer, with a long wild berry finish. The structure of this wine will demand a minimum of 3 years aging but should continue to age gracefully over the next 10-12 years. |

Planted by the Warren Winiarski Family in 1970, S.L.V. achieved international fame when the very first harvest at the winery in 1973 produced a wine that astounded the wine world by triumphing over some of France's greatest wines in a 1976 blind tasting in Paris, now commonly referred to as the “Judgement of Paris. Thirty vintages later, S.L.V. continues to yield wines of classic elegance and structure. T his history-making vineyard and terroir is beautifully expressed in this 2003 vintage wine. Alluring aromas of cocoa powder and black cherry evolve alongside pretty floral tones and a hint of smoke. Flavors of chocolate, raspberry, and black cherry coat the mouth with a light touch of cedar and truffles that weave through the multi-layered structure for which S.L.V. is renowned. Time will take this wine to even greater heights, but it can be enjoyed now for those who appreciate the robust quality of its fruit |
 | 145 | Rubicon Estate 2006 Rubicon - Bordeaux Blends Red Wine Red Wine by Rubicon Estate from Napa Valley, California. 2006 has proven to be an excellent vintage for Cabernet at Rubicon Estate. Despite heavy rain that occurred in the spring, budbreak occurred just slightly later than normal with no vine damage at all. Fruit set occurred under optimum conditions. Fortunately, summer temperatures peaked early, in mid-July, helping to reduce the vigor and setting the stage for a measured, gradual development of the fruit. In fact, even as September drew to an end, temperatures remained mild well into October, which allowed us to delay picking even longer. Because nature never forced our hand, the grapes had several extra weeks to mature. The resulting fruit displayed uniform ripeness without the high sugar levels that happen in really hot years. Winemaking Notes We took a gentle approach to the winemaking, allowing the must to cold soak for a period of four days prior to the onset of fermentation. Once the cap had risen, both punch-downs and pump-overs were made to optimize extraction. The majority of the musts were left on the skins for as long as 24 days to complete dryness. A portion of these macerations were gently warmed to 88 degrees Fahrenheit after fermentation to fully extract and complex the abundant tannin and anthocyanin (color). The result was impressively round and complex wines right out of the fermentor. The new wines were moved to 80% new French Oak barrels for 22 months. Tasting Notes Our 2006 Rubicon reflects the extended growing conditions of the vintage, displaying an elegant lusciousness of flavor as well as a long, round finish. The harmonious character of the vintage is augmented by the more classic impression of weight and fresh precision of the fruit. It is a vintage that offers much complexity and will repay aging, but is already balanced and integrated. |
